Snow Melt Systems in the Chicago Suburbs

Shoveling and salting get old fast in a Chicago winter. A hydronic snow melt system keeps driveways, walkways, steps, and patios clear by warming the surface from below, and the boiler is what makes it work. Cardinal Heating & Cooling installs, upgrades, and services boilers for snow melt systems throughout the Western Chicago suburbs, backed by more than 80 years of combined HVAC experience.

Whether your snow melt system isn’t keeping up or you’re replacing an aging boiler, our NATE-certified technicians will evaluate your setup and recommend equipment sized for the job.

Our Snow Melt Services

A snow melt system is only as reliable as the boiler behind it. When temperatures drop and the snow piles up, your boiler has to deliver enough heat to keep every square foot of pavement clear.

OUR SNOW MELT SERVICES INCLUDE:

Boiler installation for existing snow melt systems

Boiler replacement and high-efficiency upgrades

How a Snow Melt System Works

A hydronic snow melt system circulates a heated fluid through tubing installed beneath concrete, asphalt, or pavers. The fluid is usually a water and glycol mix that won’t freeze. A boiler heats it, pumps move it through the loop, and controls switch the system on when snow or ice is present, often with an outdoor snow sensor.

Because the boiler has to keep up with the size of the area and Chicago’s coldest temperatures, a properly sized and well-maintained boiler is the key to dependable melting.

Why Choose Cardinal Heating & Cooling for Thermostat Installation?

Over 80 Years of Combined Experience

Founded by Chuck Kasper and Ed Lane in 2010, our family-owned business has deep roots in the Chicago-area HVAC industry. We’ve earned our reputation by delivering quality work and honest service to every customer we serve.

NATE-Certified Technicians

Our team holds North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certifications, the gold standard in the HVAC industry. When we install your water heater, you can trust it’s being done by trained professionals who meet the highest technical standards — including the gas and venting work a tankless retrofit requires.

Correct Sizing, Every Time

A tankless system lives or dies by its sizing. We calculate your home’s peak hot-water demand and the flow rate you actually need, so you get consistent hot water to every fixture — no cold-water surprises when the dishwasher and shower run at once.

Free Initial Consultations

We believe in transparency from the very first conversation. Every tankless installation starts with a free consultation where we evaluate your home, walk you through your options, and provide honest, upfront recommendations.

What Our Homeowners Say.

★★★★★
"My self-contained wine cooling unit died, and I feared it would be a huge task to replace. Cardinal came out and installed a new one in an hour and a half. Extremely friendly, very clean work, and even took the old unit at no extra cost. They went above and beyond in every way, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience."
Jeff W.
★★★★★
"Cardinal HVAC is the absolute best. Don’t waste your time with others. Not only are they very professional and do excellent work, but they’re honest and friendly. Quick example, I had an AC problem and a couple companies came out and said it would be about a $3000 job. Cardinal came out and said it actually wasn’t a big problem and fixed it for a few hundred bucks!"
TJ B.
★★★★★
"Cardinal was great. Called them for a second opinion after the first company told us we needed a new furnace. The tech from Cardinal, Jordan, was very professional and thorough. His diagnosis was that our furnace needed a little TLC. Did not identify any major issues. Told us about their bi-annual service program and how they could help us extend the life of our HVAC system. Highly recommend."
Matt D.
★★★★★
"Cardinal heating and cooling is great! We had a panic one evening after hours during below 0 temps when our heater wasn’t responding. Cardinal responded immediately with troubleshooting steps and walked us through what to do. What they suggested worked and our family was able to sleep cozily that night!"
Rachel M.
★★★★★
"Every person I’ve interacted with at Cardinal has been knowledgeable, respectful, solution-oriented, and refreshingly honest. They’ve truly worked miracles keeping my older system running efficiently and reliably for as long as they have."
Arielle Z.
★★★★★
"Great responsive service. We have used them for the past 5 years + and never disappoint. We have dealt with both the owner on a holiday and Jordan several times which is nice to have consistency. very nice and professional. They don't try to fear monger or scare you with expensive solutions either. Trust worthy."

Frequently Asked Thermostat Installation Questions

Is a tankless water heater worth it?

For most households, yes. A tankless system heats water only when you use it, so it avoids the standby energy loss of keeping a full tank hot 24/7. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates tankless units are 24%–34% more efficient than a standard tank for homes using around 41 gallons of hot water a day, and still meaningfully more efficient for heavier users.

You also get endless hot water on demand, a longer lifespan, and a much smaller footprint. The trade-off is a higher upfront cost, which is why we start with a free consultation to make sure it’s the right fit for your home before you commit.

How long does a tankless water heater last?

A well-maintained tankless water heater commonly lasts 20 years or more — roughly double the 8-to-12-year life of a typical storage tank. Annual descaling (especially with the harder water common in parts of the Chicago area) is the single biggest factor in reaching that lifespan, and it’s something we can handle for you.

Will a tankless unit give my whole house enough hot water?

It will, as long as it’s sized correctly — that’s the key. Capacity is measured in gallons per minute (GPM) at a given temperature rise, and because our incoming water is colder in winter, sizing for a Midwest home matters. A premium Navien model can deliver in the range of 10–11+ GPM, which is enough to run multiple showers and appliances at once in most homes.

During your consultation we count your fixtures and typical simultaneous use, then match you to a unit that keeps up on your busiest morning — not just on paper.

Why does Cardinal install Navien?

Navien is a proven leader in condensing tankless technology, and their premium units pack in the features homeowners actually notice. Condensing efficiency reaches up to about 0.95–0.96 UEF; dual stainless-steel heat exchangers add durability; and their ComfortFlow® system builds a recirculation pump and buffer tank right into the unit, which helps deliver hot water faster and smooths out the “cold-water sandwich.”

Many models also include NaviLink® Wi-Fi monitoring and are backed by a strong manufacturer warranty (up to 15 years on the heat exchanger). Just as useful for retrofits: Navien units can often run on an existing ½-inch gas line, which can save homeowners the cost of a gas upgrade.

Can I switch from a tank to a tankless water heater?

In most homes, yes. A tank-to-tankless conversion involves mounting the new unit, running proper venting, and confirming your gas line and electrical can support it. We assess all of that during the consultation and handle the removal and disposal of your old tank as part of the job — often reclaiming usable space in the process.

Does a tankless water heater really lower my energy bills?

It lowers the water-heating portion of your bill by cutting standby loss — the energy a tank wastes reheating water you’re not using. Actual savings depend on your usage, fuel rates, and the efficiency of the unit you’re replacing, so we won’t promise a specific dollar figure. A high-efficiency condensing Navien unit is among the most efficient ways to heat water, and we’re happy to talk through realistic expectations for your household.
